Hi there

I have access to an Academic Research license which allows me to do a few things beyond the capabilities of the usual student license. I also like to have access to the student license on my machine just in case the license server goes down for maintenance (which it does from time to time). However, I'm having a few issues with connecting to the license server we have set up for the academic research license. It would be handy to know if the current student version of ANSYS is actually capable of connecting to a remote license server, or if that is something that is explicitly not possible on the student version.

ANSYS Student 18.2 has the license file "baked in" to the installation media and no user action is required to get a working license. That may prevent you from using a license sever.

ANSYS Student 17.2, on the other hand, requires a license file that is pointed at by an Environment variable. You can try running the Client ANSLIC_ADMIN Utility, Specify the License Server Machine (hostname and port numbers), and remove the Env. variable.  To go back to the Student license, you would delete the License Server entry and restore the Env. variable.  I don't know if this will work, but you can try it.

Hi Peter

Thanks for the answer, I suspected as much. I've gone back to the non-student install of 18.1 which is working fine with the license server, I'll just use the backup student version on a separate machine if needs be.

That's what I have, an old laptop for student projects and a new laptop (and desktop) for work that points to a license server.
