I am comparing processors for purchasing future workstations for my lab and I was wondering if ANSYS Fluent, Mechanical, or Maxwell have any limitations with Intel UltraPath Interconnect (UPI). The processors I am comparing have either UPI2 or UPI3 with the UPI3 being significantly more expensive and wanted to ensure that ANSYS Fluent is compatible with UPI3.

Thank you,

Alex

Hi Sandeep,

Thank you for this information. That answers my question.

Thank you,

Hi Alex,

Intel Xeon processors provide either two or three UPI links for connecting to neighboring sockets. The use of UPI is tightly integrated into the cache coherency of the system, so it is very fundamental to the function of the platform. Any application that runs well across multiple sockets will benefit from the added traffic lanes between sockets.

Based on what I was able to gather, we would recommend going for the UPI3, as both Fluent and Mechanical will benefit from the "added traffic lanes between sockets".  But either UPI2 or UPI3 are fine with no compatibility issues.

Regards,

Sandeep
