Can I add a stair stepping of the inflation layer at a certain point?

I would like to transition from an inflation layer to just triangles.

i would like the inflation layer to stair step in order for the transition to be smooth.

Can you insert such a transition at a certain point?

I want it to look something like the picture.

I created this manually by making 15 regions where I changed the amount of layers from 15,14,....2,,1, but for an inflation layer of 40 layers at multiple instances this is way too much work.

Can ansys generate this on its own?

Yes, ANSYS Meshing can generate stair steps. Please see image below

Hi Freek,

I assume that you are using Ansys Meshing. If it is the case,

1. Use a point for 2D or a curve for 3D to separate two zones with and without inflation layers. 

2. Set up inflation layers for the zone that needs them.

3. In Mesh global settings, switch Inflation -> View Advanced Options to Yes and select Stair Stepping option for Collision Avoidance.

With this advanced option on, you should be able to create a stair stepping of inflation layers automatically.

Thanks for your reactions.

It did not work however, when I try your method I get the following (see picture):



As you can see, the inflation layer just stops abruptly, in stead of making a nice stair stepping.

Any thoughts on how to improve this behaviour?

You need to apply the same number of inflation layers to the green volume too. Terminating inflation can be quite difficult, so you need to look at the whole model and work out how it'll look before you start meshing.

I don't want an inflation layer in the green part. 

I want to stop the inflation layer there, but more smoothly, like a stair stepping, like Keyur illustrated.

Only I can't seem to figure out how to achieve that.

Sorry maybe I did not make myself clear last time.

Please split the surfaces only if it is a 3D model and accordingly split the edges if it is a 2D model. Please do not split the solid body into separate zones. I did a test on a 3D rectangular pipe as shown below. The pipe is one single solid body and I used a plane to split its side wall surfaces (where red arrows point). Then I added inflation layers to surfaces at the right where I need inflation layers. The mesher successfully created step-stair-type inflation layers. Hopefully this is helpful.

Yea that looks like what I want

Sorry, I am really new to Ansys and I appreciate your help tremendously!

I still don't seem to get it right unfortunately..


I am working in 2D.

I have 1 surface body (frozen), I projected a point on the edge to separate the edge in two.

Next in meshing I applied “All triangles method” to the body.

I created an inflation layer on the face at one of the two edges using first layer thickness and 15 maximum layers.

I set under Mesh – Inflation – View advanced options – Collision Avoidance: Stair Stepping.

And I generate the following mesh:


 Is it the way I seperate the edge that is wrong? Or is there something else?

Because it seems like the last portion of the inflation gets stair-stepped for 1 layer at the top...

You are right. It seems that it does not work as expected in a 2D case if no inflation is added to the right edge. Now the workaround is to add only ONE layer (unfortunately we cannot add 0 inflation layer) on the right edge then you should be able to get stair-stepping inflation layers at the transition area as shown below. However, you might need to refine the mesh cells close to the right edge to ensure a smooth transition between the individual thin inflation layer and above triangles. Hopefully this helps. Thanks!
