Carbon fiber with particle impregnation in a fluid

Hi all, 

right now I am doing my Thesis on the Topic ''Simulation of Carbon fiber impregnation with dispersed Thermoplastic polymers in water''. I have to do this using Ansys fluent to which I am completely new. So I Need your Suggestions and important notes to finish this. At first, my Task is to create a simple Carbon fiber Filament Simulation with particles. Any idea is highly appreciable. Thanks in advance.

Please can you add some more information such as whether the liquid is a single material or slurry, what scale you're looking at and what results do you want to see?

The liquid is not slurry. It is just water. I don't understand what you meant by at what scale am I looking for.

What are the dimensions, in mm, of the container that is holding the water and polymer?

What is the total mass of water?

Is the thermoplastic polymer a liquid? I assume that since you use the word impregnation.

What is the total mass of polymer?

What are the dimensions, in mm, of a typical carbon fiber?

What is the total mass of carbon fiber?

Why is there water involved?  I don't understand that.

Dimensions of the container-not known clearl( how far are those important in consideration?? Could you please explain??)

The mass of water-- It has to be chosen by it is also clearly not known

Carbon fiber dimensions-(filament diameter 7 micrometers)

continuous carbon fiber filaments are passed through the solvent.

We are passing the individual carbon filaments into the water which contains polymers already immersed in it. That is one type of impregnation technique we are considering.

Please suggest what I lack or what should I know regarding the topic.

The dimensions are useful to help think about the problem. There are discussions on this site that are measured in microns and others that are measured in meters. Knowing the size would permit guidance on whether an appropriate selection of methods to solve the problem.

How are the fibers distributed in space? For example, it could be a single fiber passing through the water, or it could be a weave of fibers, or it could be a large number of short random fibers.

It is a single fiber passing through the water. Actually it is single filament of carbon fiber passing through water and then all these are pressed together to form the composite material.

What do you want to know about the fibre? Then what do you expect to happen (and want to know) as it reaches the composite surface?

Initially, my task is to simulate a carbon fiber with particles immersed in water using ansys fluent. The main aim is to develop a model in ansys fluent in order to reduce number of trails.

Hi peteroznewman, 

I got to represent a carbon fiber of 7 micro meters in ansys spaceclaim.  I have declared units to mm. Now, when I tried applying the dimensions to my carbon fiber which is cylinder in shape(diameter of 7 micrometers), I am unable to do that. What should I do build a diameter of 7 micro meter  cylinder in Ansys spaceclaim?

Build the model in mm so it's 7mm diameter and scale in Fluent. Most CAD tools operate to a fixed lower tolerance of 0.1 or 0.01mm (ish) and using microns tends to break the connectivity etc.

I'm still not sure what you are expecting from the model: do you want particles to hit the fibre or flow around it? Remember that at 7microns with (possibly) smaller particles things like electrostatics are going to play a major part in particle motion: you'll need to code a model for this.

Exactly...Even my professor is also asking me to send him the first piece of code. As of now, I clearly don't understand what is meant by code in ansys.

And regarding particle behavior around the filament-- we are expecting that these thermoplastic particles which are immersed in water will impregnate into the filament when the filament is passed through this water.  

So, I think I need to create a model considering the above process.

I think you may want to sit down with your professor and work through the problem and expected physics. From there we can try and figure out which bits of Fluent you need to learn about and apply. 

Re the particles why would they impregnate the fibre rather than bouncing off?  Can you fix the fibre and move the fluid?

What happens when the particles hit the fiber? My initial task is to know how the particles stick to fiber. what should be done or what forces act in that system?

Are particles sticking to the carbon filament..if yes, what parameters are important to know to do it in simulation??

This is something you need to know before the calculation: Fluent will show IF particles hit the fibre, you need to define what happens next. 

In Fluent we have the accretion model, but also can define trap or reflect conditions for the particles: it you need something more complex then you'll need to look into UDF coding. Either way you define what happens for given flow condition & Fluent will determine the flow condition.

Just check with your professor and come back with a concise task to follow. You can model the fibers as additional scalar or track the fibers with discrete phase model and make some corrections for drag (high Knudsen number and shape) at that scale all other forces (thermophoretic, brownian, van-der-waals) might become important.


Just provide details from prof.

Here I will tell you the basic physics involved in the problem. Actually we are considering a new technique to produce fiber composites. For this we are passing the carbon fibers through an aqueous suspension of PEEK polymers. Right now, my task is know what forces will involve between the interactions of particle and fibers and how the particles adhere to the fiber passing through. Any suggestions how to gain knowledge regarding this?? and is this possible to simulate these type of problems with ansys fluent??

You need to work out what physics is involved, and then we can help guide you with the models you'll need (or need to modify) within Fluent.
