FSI Simulation of a flexible flapping wing with Overset Mesh

I have been able to model a flexible flapping wing using dynamic mesh in Fluent with wing in flapping motion using joint rotation in ANSYS Transient Structural. Now, I like to use overset meshing instead of dynamic meshing.

I have used overset for rigid wing with RBM but I am wondering if overset mesh can be used for coupled FSI for a wing that is flapping and deforming at the same time.

None of the overset materials I have found discuss flexible geometry. Plus they are all for 2-D cases.

Hi Kamran,

Overset and system coupling are compatible. However, you'll need to model the problem in 3D which is a requirement of system coupling.

Hi Ryan,

It is good to know that I can proceed with Overset. My geometry is 3-D and I was planning to do 3-D. The problem I have is that I don't see any 3-D example for Overset, especially with coupling.

 Here is my issue:


I have created a background mesh (the grid that covers the flow domain).  I have also generated a component mesh or inner mesh that is encloses the wing and it is refined enough to resolve the flow field near the wing. Now, I am not sure what to do with the wing. Since the wing will be flapping and deforming, should be overset on the inner mesh? Thank you.

Can anybody help me set up a 3-D FSI case using an overset mesh? I am looking for an example/ tutorial of how to set it up properly. Thanks.
