How to delete unwanted edges when import model from Solidworks?

Hello,

When I import a simple shaft from Solidworks into ANSYS, edges form across the entire model and I cannot add a bearing to a split faced shaft. How do I delete these edges?

Hello,

Open the geometry in SpaceClaim, go to the Repair tab and Select Merge Faces. Ctrl Click the two faces and click the green check mark to complete.

[EDIT per FrankD below: use the Repair>>Fix group>Extra edges, or to simply select the cylindrical edges that you see, and delete them.]

Hello, 

Please user Merge Faces tool carefully. It may corrupt geometry. You can use Virtual Topology in meshing. 

May I ask you why do you want to remove these edges. The geometry looks fine to me from the image you inserted.

Well when I tried to apply a bearing to the shaft, I clicked two faces and ansys did not allow that.

When you use a tool like Merge Faces, it is using the existing faces' definition in space, and then ripping out the selected faces, and using their whole boundary to make a new face, as close as possible to the old ones. Yes, internal edges will be removed, but you have to know that a whole new thing gets made. Moreover, these new things are spline faces (not simple ones: planes, tori, cones, cylinders) and can result in much heavier later operations and calculations.

kkanade said corrupt, but that is the wrong term for what the tool is doing. If you imagine that the face that the algorithm is starting from is planar, and it gets "warped" down into the best fit to the old surfaces, you can see that the more curved these are, the less able the algorithm is to handle that case nicely. Strictly-speaking, a "corrupt" face is not select-able and we try very hard not to make those. 

 

A much better option is to try to use the Repair>>Fix group>Extra edges, or to simply select the cylindrical edges that you see, and delete them. These two methods do not recreate the faces, but rather, remove the boundary (provided the face definitions are close enough to allow that) 

Since we are on that, if the faces are not close-enough, that is sometimes what the Simplify tool can do for you, take some currently-spline-but-close-to-simple faces, and replace them with simple faces.

Thanks Frank, I have used Repair>>Fix group>Extra edges before, but I didn't know that Merge Faces did not take two cylindrical faces and simply make one cylindrical face. I assumed SC would do that. I will change my approach to geometry cleanup with this new knowledge. (My first post is now Edited to point to your better option.)

i tried to delete the edges nothing happens . I went to repair>Fix> Extra edges . it showed me no extra edges . So i tried to do it manually but nothing is happening. Please help

solved it. Problem is with iges format . it worked with step file .
