Wind Flow over Complex Terrain

 Hello everyone,

I am thinking of starting now using FLUENT and its related tools in order to work on my thesis related to "Wind farms on complex terrain".

Does anyone know if there there any available tutorials for creating own geometries and/or meshing of complex terrains using Design Modeler and ICEM CFD. Or alternatively, is there another software which works well with FLUENT on that matter?

Furthermore, for that kind of flow simulation is FLUENT of CFX better?

Thank you.

Hello,

Will you be creating the Digital Elevation Model from external data such as the USGS, or will you be making up your own geometry?  If you are importing data, there will be some reformatting from the way the data was saved in the external database to the way SpaceClaim or DesignModeler can import that data.

I'm guessing Fluent will be a better choice than CFX, but I will like to hear other opinions.

Regards,

Peter

Hi,

CFX and Fluent can both solve this case, I prefer Fluent. As for the geometry, I am assuming you have some sort of X,Y,Z data file for your topography which you can use to model geometry?

Hello Peter and Raef,

Thank you for your kind answers. I am glad FLUENT sounds the better option for this case. Regarding geometry, in the beginning I am creating my own to run test cases and in the process I will get an DEM file. I am aware it will probably need reformatting.

Another think I wish to ask is which would be the best way to simulate the wind turbines in the virtual space? I have found relevant information and a tutorial using the Virtual Blade Model, which can be found here: http://nbviewer.jupyter.org/github/sfo-project/3D-flow-over-WindTidal-turbine-VBM-turbulent/blob/master/Fluent/README.ipynb .

Regards,

Ioannis

P.S. I am sorry for the delayed reply but there seams to be an issue when I am trying to "Add Post", so I changed browser..

Hi,

Did you try  BladeModeler from ANSYS?

Here is the tutorial on Wind turbine if this helps in any way.
